SOUTH PORTLAND – The Darcy Wakefield Fun Run Walk Roll will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Southern Maine Community College. All proceeds will benefit the Darcy Wakefield Scholarship Fund at the college.
Wakefield, daughter of Nancy and John Wakefield of Livermore, attended Bates College. She was a faculty member teaching English and History at SMCC when diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Upon her death in December 2005 a scholarship fund in her memory was started at the school.
The annual Fun Run Walk Roll, with views of Casco Bay, will have two courses. Course 1 is a mildly strenuous course, including a short run over the sandy shores of Willard Beach, a quarter-mile jaunt on the walkway overlooking Casco Bay and flat loops to Spring Point Light and the college pier.
Course 2 is for rollers (wheelchairs and strollers) as well as runners and walkers. The course has been altered to include much of the same scenery and all the loops of Course 1 while eliminating the beach portion and the stairs.
Both courses will include a water stop and first aid station and both will start and end at the picnic area adjacent to the athletic field overlooking the bay.
Registration forms for sponsorship may be obtained from Toni Parise, c/o Southern Maine Community College, 2 Fort Road, South Portland, ME 04106.
All contributions benefit the Wakefield Scholarship Fund, and checks should be made payable to the: SMCC Foundation/DW Fund.
