LEWISTON – A Maine Turnpike Authority committee will meet here tonight to discuss whether Maine’s toll rates are fair and equitable for every part of the state.
The meeting will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ramada Inn on Pleasant Street. The meeting will be open to the public, and time will be allotted at the end for public comment.
Ten years ago, the Maine Turnpike switched from a toll ticket system, which charged tolls per mile, to a fixed fare system, which charges tolls only at certain locations. Since the switch, officials from all regions have complained that their area pays higher tolls than everyone else. The Turnpike Authority formed an advisory committee in 2006 to look at the issue.
The committee is scheduled to finish its work by January.
