PORTLAND (AP) – State heath officials say three cases of mumps have been diagnosed in Maine, the first in a dozen years.
Director Dora Anne Mills of the Maine Center for Disease Control said there is no common connection among the three adults infected with the virus. She said there probably are others in Maine with the contagious disease and a health alert has been put out to physicians.
In addition to flu-like symptoms, mumps causes swelling in the salivary glands.
Mills theorized that those who contracted mumps may have failed to receive the recommended second vaccination, and that Mainers should check on their vaccination status.
