LEWISTON – Police investigating a burglary Tuesday morning recovered a stash of heroin and cocaine as well as thousands of dollars they say was the result of drug transactions.
Police and drug agents who searched an apartment at 56 Pierce St. said they found 11 grams of heroin and 42 grams of powdered cocaine.
Two people were questioned after the search, but no arrests were made in relation to drug trafficking. However, Lewiston police arrested 30-year-old Derek Howe of 75 Howard St. at the Pierce Street apartment and charged him with violating bail conditions.
Police had been called to the apartment on an unrelated matter when they noticed signs of drug trafficking in the building, Deputy Chief Michael Bussiere said.
“They were there doing a follow-up investigation on a burglary,” Bussiere said. “They noticed paraphernalia in the apartment.”
A drug-sniffing dog helped investigators locate the heroin and cocaine, Bussiere said. Also recovered was more than $3,000 believed to be related to drug trafficking.
Howe remained jailed Tuesday night. Police said more charges could be filed in the case as the investigation continues.
The case was being investigated by the Lewiston Police Department and the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency.
