AUBURN – A local man was arrested Tuesday morning after police said he drove his car into two other vehicles, a building and a utility pole during an erratic ride through New Auburn.

David Demotta, 55, of 89 Gill St., was arrested on charges of driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of a crash after the series of wrecks about 11:30 a.m.

Police said the destruction began as Demotta was leaving Wheeler’s Market on South Main Street.

The driver, they said, drove into the side of the store before heading back toward Main Street.

Minutes later, Demotta was driving near Florian’s Market when he crashed into a vehicle there, police said.

According to a police report, Demotta kept driving, struck a second vehicle, and then slammed into a utility pole in front of Bix Furniture Strippers at Main Street and Laurel Avenue.

Nobody was seriously hurt in the series of crashes. Police said Demotta was apparently trying to drive back to his home when he lost control of his vehicle.

Demotta, a former Lewiston police officer, has a criminal history of domestic abuse and related charges, according to court records.

He was taken to the Androscoggin County Jail where he remained Tuesday night.
