TEMPLE – The cause of a fire that destroyed a camp Tuesday night and burned more than about 3 wooded acres is undetermined but it is believed to have started near or in the camp, retired fire Chief George Andrews said.

The camp on Pine Point Road, off Varnum Pond Road, is owned by William and Barbara Hodgkins of Temple, who also have a primary residence in that town, William Hodgkins said Wednesday.

The Hodgkins own Hodgkins Store East on Main Street in Farmington, which sells antiques and home décor products as well as offering interior design services.

Andrews said the Hodgkins had been staying at the camp but were not there at the time the fire began.

More than 40 firefighters from nine fire departments responded to the fire call, which was reported at 7:24 p.m., Andrews said.

State fire investigators were called in to help determine the cause.
