FARMINGTON – The Mt. Blue Theatre Company will present “Our Town,” the classic 1938 Pulitzer-Prize winning drama by Thornton Wilder. Deborah Muise directs, assisted by Kelly Greene and stage manager Kat Zachary.
“Our Town” follows the lives of two families united through marriage in the small town of Grover’s Corners, N.H. Along the way, poignant and timeless observations on life, love, and death are subtly blended into Wilder’s masterful dialogue.
A key aspect of the show is the complete absence of props and scenery. Wilder believed “that something had gone wrong. … that the theater was not only inadequate, it was evasive.” His response was to remove everything but the actors. This means that everything must be pantomimed.
“Our claim, our hope, our despair are in the mind – not in things, not in ‘scenery'” Wilder stated.
The move revolutionized theater, and disgusted some – the wife of the governor of Massachusetts walked out halfway through the show’s debut.
James Rossi plays the ubiquitous and omniscient Stage Manager, in this case a major acting role in the play. Mt. Blue theater veteran Zoe Hardy portrays Emily Webb, a dreamer. Alex Kreitzman plays George Gibbs, the star baseball player who falls in love with Emily. Craig Collins and Emily Pottle play George’s parents, and Sam Cohen and Ally West play Emily’s parents.
The show will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Nov. 1-3, in the Mt. Blue High School auditorium. Tickets are $4.50 for adults, $2.50 for students.
