A little history may be in the works at the state cross country championships. No team from the East has won the Class A boys’ crown since 1995 and no Lewiston team has ever run off with a state title.
The Blue Devils boys are looking to change both trends Saturday at the Leavitt Area High School course.
Lawrence was the last boys’ team representing the eastern portion of the state to stand atop the podium. Edward Little’s three consecutive crowns from 1998 through 2000 came when EL and Lewiston were members of Western Maine.
Lewiston has been the top ranked boys’ team in the coaches’ poll from the season’s outset. Being the favorite doesn’t seem to bother the Blue Devils.
“We’re not sneaking up on anybody,” says Lewiston coach Ray Putnam. “The kids joke that we should put a target on our backs. They’re nervous, but confident. If they go out and do what they do, they’ll be okay.”
The bull’s-eye has been on their backs all season, but no one has stayed with the Blue Devils or race favorite Mohamed Noor of Lewiston.
The Blue Devils won both the KVAC crown and the East Regional title by 40-point margins over runner-up Mt. Blue. At the Festival of Champions in Belfast earlier this month, they beat Portland, the West Regional champ, by 60 points.
While Cheverus and Portland won’t make things easy, Lewiston’s top seven is ready to go.
“Everything looks really good,” says Putnam. “This week we’ll be running at 100 percent for the first time all year.”
The key for Lewiston may be where its No. 5 runner finishes. The top four of Noor, Sadam Abdi, Robbie Leeman and Matt Driscoll have been consistent all season. Noor hasn’t lost a race since the preseason.
Rain will be a factor, with precipitation expected to be at 100 percent.
“We train for all conditions and prepare for all conditions,” says Putnam. “If we don’t win on Saturday, no one will use that as an excuse.”
Bangor’s Riley Masters, Biddeford’s Matt Martin, Mt. Blue’s Eric Marceau and Taylor Dundas of Cheverus could push Noor.
For Class A girls, Brunswick is vying for its third straight title, with Brewer, Massabesic and Scarborough also contending. East regional champion Silver Hunt of Mt. Blue is one of the favorites, along with Massabesic’s Katherine Pierce in what may be the most wide-open race of the day.
The Lisbon boys are not the favorite, but their four-year stranglehold on the C crown won’t be given up without a fight. Winthrop defeated their Mountain Valley Conference rival at the regional meet and is poised for its first team title.
“We got beat by a faster team (last weekend),” says Lisbon coach Hank Fuller. “They’re fast up front, they’re experienced and they’re deep. They’re definitely the team to beat.”
Winthrop’s one-two punch of Danny Soltan and Tor O’Brien should be pushed by Hall-Dale’s Wade Davis.
Mattanawcook and Waynflete are the top two girls teams in Class C. Waynflete’s Adele Espy and Mattanawcook’s Renee LaFlamme should battle it out for individual honors.
The Cape Elizabeth boys and girls are looking to sweep Class B. The Greely boys and Mt. Desert Island girls will be their obstacles.
Among the individual boys to watch are Falmouth’s Ethan Shaw, who sat out last weekend’s regionals, Poland’s Nick Williams, Cape Elizabeth’s Matt Rand, Presque Isle’s Corey Park and Leavitt’s Justin Fereshetian who’ll be running his last race on his home course. For the girls, Yarmouth’s Anna Markeretz, Cape Elizabeth’s Emily Attwood, MDI’s Heather Spurling and Falmouth’s Madeline Grygiel are among the favorites.
