WINTHROP – Nothing went right for the Winthrop Ramblers in the first half Friday night.
They went into the locker room at halftime trailing by 16 points with only two first downs. They had one run for 58 yards, yet totaled only 49 on the ground for the half. None of their offensive series went for more than four plays.
On top of that, they couldn’t stop the Lisbon offense.
Oh, and they were flagged for 52 yards in penalties as well, including a 15-yarder when their sideline personnel got out of hand.
Things turned full circle in the second half as the Ramblers forced five turnovers, turned in a pair of quarterback sacks and scored 30 unanswered points for a 36-22 victory.
The win clinched the Campbell Conference regular-season Class C title for the Ramblers (8-1). They’ll host Old Orchard next Friday night, while the Greyhounds end their season at 5-4 and out of the playoff picture.
To say the Greyhounds dominated the first half would be an understatement. They ran for 108 yards as a team while quarterback Mike Unterkoefler completed 5-of-6 passes for 96 yards.
They had the Ramblers reeling. On one play, Unterkoefler rolled to his left. Winthrop defensive back Joe Morey was forced to momentarily leave receiver Andy Ouellette to make a play on the senior quarterback. Unterkoefler softly lobbed the ball over Morey for a 26-yard completion.
Two quarterback sneaks by Unterkoefler and a 3-yard touchdown run by fullback Josh Cote (15 carries for a team-high 67 yards) helped Lisbon pull ahead 22-6.
“The game plan was we were going to run up the middle,” said Winthrop coach Joel Stoneton. “They shut our run game down and kept us off the field with their offense.”
Winthrop quarterback Jordan Conant struggled to generate offense through the air as well in the first half. While he tossed a 36-yard scoring pass to Jason Raymond, that was his only completion in nine attempts.
Riley Cobb got things going for Winthrop in the third quarter when he pounced on a Lisbon fumble on the second play from scrimmage. It proved to the first of five second-half turnovers by the Greyhounds.
Eight plays later, Conant found Andrew Smithgall in the end zone and threaded a pass to the big tight end between two defenders.
Following a three-and-out stand by the Winthrop defense, Conant rolled left and threw another touchdown pass to Smithgall across the field. This one went for 34 yards.
“I was looking for a post (pattern),” said Conant, who finished 7-of-17 for 182 yards and three touchdowns. “I just threw it over to him on the other side and he made a great catch.”
Joe Morey rushed for the two-point conversions after both scores to knot the game at 22-22.
Morey played an even bigger role early in the fourth quarter. Unterkoefler dropped back from his own 22 and attempted a screen pass to the right. Morey stepped in front of the receiver at the 14 to intercept the ball and return it for the score. It was one of four interceptions by the Ramblers in the second half. He later tacked on a 1-yard scoring run and finished with 96 yards on the ground.
“I thought we played well in the first half,” said Lisbon coach Dick Mynahan. “The second half usually goes to the better team. It’s pretty tough to stop a team when it’s playing like that.”
“We’ve known for a while we have a good defense when we show up,” said Stoneton, whose defensive unit yielded just three first downs and 52 yards of offense in the second half. “They ran for a while and then they lost a couple of linemen. That was the key to the game. I’m just proud of our kids.”
