DOVER-FOXCROFT (AP) – A Garland man accused of trying to attack a woman who was looking for the Appalachian Trail is in jail.

Police say the episode unfolded when a motorist stopped to ask for directions in Elliotsville. Police say she gunned the engine and dragged the man for 50 yards after he reached in her open window and tried to grab the steering wheel.

Police arrested 39-year-old Mark Meech on Saturday after he went to his sister’s house to report that he’d been run over.

He’s being held at the Piscataquis County Jail in Dover-Foxcroft on a charge of attempted aggravated assault. Bail was set at $500 but he won’t be released because he’s being held for violating probation.
