RUMFORD – Selectmen will begin exploring whether to share services with neighboring Mexico, and hear a presentation by Parks Commission Superintendent Tim Gallant on future plans when they meet Thursday night.

The two sessions, beginning at 5 p.m., will be held prior to the start of the selectmen’s regular meeting.

At 5 p.m., Gallant and the five-person Parks Commission will discuss long-range plans for the Hosmer Field complex that could eventually turn it into Rumford’s recreation park.

“We want to brief selectmen on our ideas,” Gallant said.

He said the commission has suggested creating a skateboard park, children’s playground and non-motorized dirt bike track, among other things. The commission is also selling advertising space at Hosmer Field. Gallant would like to see whatever money is raised from those efforts go into a parks-improvement account rather than the town’s general fund.

At 6 p.m., selectmen will meet with the town manager and selectmen from neighboring Mexico to discuss ways to work together.

Mexico Town Manager John Madigan and Mexico selectmen Chairwoman Barbara Laramee have participated in similar discussions several times during the past few years. But they are willing to give it another try.

“They invited us so we’re going to hear them out,” Madigan said. “New board members want to discuss it.”

Laramee, who supports regionalization, said she is open to beginning talks again.

“We’ve been through this many times, but we’ll see what they have to say,” she said.

During the regular selectmen’s meeting, which starts at 7 p.m., agenda items include a closed session to discuss the public works employee contract, an update on the downtown revitalization grant, and a request for use of the Wall of Fame at the information booth by Scot Grassette.
