Dear Sun Spots: I hope you can please find an answer to my question.
When and where will the movie, “Into the Wild,” be shown? I’ve read great reviews in magazines and in Sunday papers. According to one magazine it was out Sept. 27. I read the book and want to see the movie. I looked at the TV listings and movie guides daily but am not locating a date or time of showing here locally. Please help. – Vivian M., No Town.
Answer: Sun Spots would urge you to immediately contact the Evening Star Cinema, Tontine Mall, 149 Maine St., Brunswick, 729-5486, www.eveningstarcinema.com. They will be showing it for a limited two-week engagement. The movie will be aired daily at 1:30 p.m., 4:10 p.m. and 6:50 p.m., with a 9:30 p.m. show on Friday and Saturday. Arrive early.
Dear Sun Spots: What is going to happen when TV stations drop their analog broadcasts? Exactly what will those of us who have older sets do and how much will it cost? If you have cable or satellite, will that be taken care of automatically?
I’m sure many of us would like to know so that we can prepare. – Marilyn Burgess, Leeds.
Answer: In March, the Federal Communications Commission ruled that all new television sets in the United States must have digital tuners. On Feb. 17, 2009, the over-the-air signal used by traditional televisions to pick up local programming will end. The transmissions will be shut off, by law, and only newer sets equipped to receive new digital signals will work.
Television owners have the option of purchasing a digital-to-analog converter box; purchase a new television set with built in digital tuner or, subscribe to cable, satellite or a telephone company video provider.
Congress has set aside $1.5 billion for coupons, and these will be distributed beginning in 2008. Each coupon will be worth $40 toward the purchase of a converter.
