I recently made a sad discovery on College Street in Lewiston – a dead Chihuahua dog, hit by a car. It had been a stray in my neighborhood for about two months.

I and several neighbors had made fruitless attempts to catch the little guy, in addition to asking Lewiston’s animal control officer to capture the dog. I was even informed by police the dog was caught, which was apparently not the case. I know the department lacks resources, but I think this situation was unnecessary.

I really want to bring attention to folks who can no longer care for their pets. Abandoning them to city streets is not the answer. Please bring your unwanted pet, for whatever reason, to the Greater Androscoggin Humane Society.

If they are closed, please go to the Lewiston Emergency Animal Hospital, both located on Strawberry Avenue in Lewiston. This is not an animal problem but a people problem!
