EAST LYME, Conn. (AP) – The driver of a tanker truck and two Connecticut residents have been identified as the victims of a fatal crash that shut down Interstate 95 for hours Friday and prompted an environmental cleanup.

Peter M. Derry III, 51, of Webster, Mass., was killed when his northbound tanker lost control and broke through the highway’s guardrail, crossed the median and struck a southbound tractor-trailer and other vehicles, police said.

Two people in those vehicles also were killed. Connecticut State Police identified them Saturday as 54-year-old Luann Dugas of East Lyme and 33-year-old Fred Held of Milford.

Three other people suffered injuries that police described as not life-threatening, and were taken to area hospitals. Information on their conditions was not available Saturday.

The collision occurred shortly after 10 a.m. Friday, forcing emergency crews to close all lanes of I-95 along with parts of I-395 and Route 1. The last of the blocked lanes was reopened early Saturday.

Workers from the state Department of Environmental Protection were called to the scene Friday and returned Saturday to clean up nearby Latimer Brook, where up to 5,000 gallons of home heating oil spilled when Derry’s tanker crashed.

The interstate is the main artery that connects New York, Providence and Boston in the region. The accident site also was near the state’s two large casinos, Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casino.

Connecticut State Police spokesman Lt. J. Paul Vance has said investigators likely will need several weeks to conclude their review of the crash.
