AUBURN – A 46-year-old man critically injured himself early Wednesday in a suicide attempt, according to Auburn police.

Deputy Chief Jason Moen declined to identify the victim, who suffered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was found behind a metal fabrication company on Broad Street, where he had reportedly been camping or squatting.

“Neighbors found him in the car, that’s when they called us,” Moen said.

Police were observed carrying away two large shotgun-style firearms, but Moen declined comment on the type of weapon used. Officers were also armed with shotguns when approaching the scene, a remote, wooded area filled with rusted cars and trailers about 250 yards from the road.

“We wanted to take a nice careful approach, to make sure none of us were jeopardized,” Moen said.
