BRUNSWICK (AP) – Bowdoin College is grappling with an outbreak of atypical pneumonia on the Brunswick campus.

Spokesman Scott Hood says the college normally deals with a handful of “walking pneumonia” each year. But this year, there have been 32 cases since mid-September, and Hood says 12 students were “acutely ill” as of Wednesday. He says two students were hospitalized briefly for dehydration and then returned to their dorms.

Dr. Dora Anne Mills, the state’s health chief, says the bug has been identified as Mycoplasma pneumoniae. It’s dubbed “atypical” because the organism can be difficult to recognize in a lab test and needs different medications.
