Veterans program
PHILLIPS – An open house will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 11, at the Community House to honor the service of veterans, past and present.
More than 400 names are on the list of veterans. On display will be a Gold Star Mother’s Banner dating from World War II. Light refreshments will be served and all are invited.
The event is sponsored by the Phillips American Legion Auxiliary.
Film to be aired
FARMINGTON – “The War on Democracy,” a film by John Pilger, will be shown at 7 p.m. Monday, Nov. 12, in room 106 of the new Education Center at the University of Maine at Farmington on High Street. The showing is sponsored by the Western Mountains Peace Action Workshop.
The film is Australian John Pilger’s first film for cinema after 55 documentaries. It opened in Britain in June, but has not been seen in the United States.
Pilger said, “The film is about the power of empire and of people. It was shot in Venezuela, Bolivia, Chile and the United States, and is set also in Guatemala and Nicaragua. It tells the story of ‘America’s backyard’ … It traces the struggle of indigenous people.”

Society supper
FARMINGTON – The Farmington Historical Society will meet on Monday, Nov. 12, at the Henderson Memorial Baptist Church, Academy Street.
There will be a potluck supper at 6 p.m. followed by a business meeting and program at 7. The program will be presented by Jim Merrick, archivist and collector’s manager for the Stanley Museum in Kingfield. Guests and new members are welcome.
Teachers to meet
FARMINGTON – Franklin County Retired Teachers will meet at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, at Two Oakes, 218 Fairbanks Road, for a program, meeting and luncheon. All retired educators are welcome. For reservations, call 778-4282.
Holiday dinner
FARMINGTON – The Scottish Rite Masons are sponsoring a free Thanksgiving Day dinner from noon to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 22, at the Mt. Blue High School cafeteria. Those in the greater Franklin County area not able to go to the school may call 779-0641 for home delivery. Everyone is welcome.
Garden topic
FARMINGTON – Dave Fuller from the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Master Gardeners will address the subject of “Growing Garlic” at the Mt. Blue Area Garden Club meeting on Tuesday, Nov. 20, at the Trinity United Methodist Church.
A social half hour at 12:30 p.m. will precede the 1 p.m. meeting, hosted by Agnes Brooks, Betty Leeman and Myrna Vallette. The public is invited to all of the garden club meetings.
