ROXBURY – As brisk temperatures spawned occasional snow flurries Thursday morning, a small group of Roxbury residents and officials lugged equipment out of the old municipal building and drove it to the new complex four miles away.
After about 40 years of use, the old office was closed for good. Town business will resume on Tuesday. A sign in the window directed people to the new office at 1095 Roxbury Road, which is also Route 17.
Adjacent to the intersection of Frye Crossover Road and near Roxbury’s post office, the complex was built at the site of the former Precision Metals building.
The move is expected to take three days.
“I’ve only worked here a couple of months, but this is going to be wonderful,” Deputy Clerk Nina Rollins said of the spacious office. It will have a window and customer counter.
In the old municipal building, people walked right into the tiny office or stood in the doorway.
“I think it’s great that residents are finally going to have a place for a community meeting area,” Deputy Clerk Rosie Susbury added.
The old town office was built in the 1960s on Raymond and Sylvia Touchette’s property at 1869 Roxbury Road with their permission.
One of the biggest worries was moving the firetruck outside during the winter so large meetings could be held in the fire station bay, Mary Touchette, wife of retired fire Chief Gordon Touchette, said Thursday while taking a break. She said there was always a danger that gear on the truck and its motor could freeze up.
Additionally, the furnace in the old town office was so loud it made talking and listening difficult, Sylvia Touchette said.
Sylvia Touchette said she and her husband aren’t sure what they’ll do with the building, which, if it ever ceased to be a fire station, would revert back to them.
“We’ll probably use it for storage. It’s got a lot of ceiling work to do,” she said.
The new municipal complex sports an attached fire station. The furnace is behind it, leaving a spacious room complete with a refrigerator, stove and microwave. The town office also has a long shelf along one wall, replacing two desks used as shelves in the old office.
Additionally, there is plenty of parking space.
Although furniture and equipment have yet to be arranged, the Planning Board held a meeting there Thursday night. Selectmen will have their first meeting there at 7 p.m. today.
Fire station equipment, including the firetruck, is expected to be moved Saturday.
“It’s been a long time coming, but we’re here,” Rollins said.
