WELD – At 96, Lyder S. Wilkins was presented the Boston Post Cane on Friday acknowledging her as the oldest resident in the town.

Selectman Bernard R. Vining presented the cane at the town office. Attending were Wilkins’ son, Lynn Sterry Jr., her grandson, Mark Sterry, granddaughter, Tracy Houghton, and Sean Minear, president of Weld Historical Society and Carol Cochran, town clerk.

Lyder was born May 25, 1911, in Solon, the daughter of Carrol and Dora Adams.

She has seven brothers and four sisters. In December 1933 she married Lynn Sterry of Starks. He died in January 1965 and in December 1975 she married Garnet Wilkins of Embden.

The couple moved to Weld in 1987. After Garnet died in 1990, she lived alone until 2001, when her son Lynn (Joe) Jr. moved in with her.

She is still active, mowing the lawn with an old-fashioned lawn mower and flower gardening.
