LEWISTON – About 5,300 homes and businesses on the east side of Lewiston lost power for about an hour Tuesday.

The cause was a pair of burned switches at an electrical substation, Central Maine Power spokeswoman Gail Rice said.

Power went down shortly after noon and was restored by 1:20 p.m.

During the outage, police erected stop signs at key intersections where traffic lights were knocked out. There were no reports of accidents, said Lt. Mark Watson of the Lewiston Police Department.
