BAR HARBOR (AP) – College of the Atlantic’s commitment to become the nation’s first “net-zero” campus for carbon emissions is getting attention on the presidential campaign trail.

Democrat Hillary Clinton singled out the Bar Harbor school for getting the ball rolling on the concept in 2006. She says 270 more colleges and universities have taken the same “net-zero” pledge since then.

Her remarks last week came after College of the Atlantic became one of 11 pilot colleges and universities to work with the Clinton Climate Initiative to reduce greenhouse gasses.

The participants are among the more than 400 signatories of the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. College of the Atlantic’s President David Hales was a founding member of this organization.
