Sen. Susan Collins is at it again! Ostensibly unaware of constituent woes – high taxes, fuel costs and a declining economy – she seems determined to dwell upon lesser matters. Indeed, the staunch advocate of laissez-aller bipartisanship is now ready to compromise the values of this nation.
Collins, of course, has habitually flouted the will of people in order to manipulate voter demographics. This time she is advocating special rights for homosexuals while deftly stroking the libertine-without-borders, wine-and-cheese crowd who champion the cause célbre.
Edmund Burke once aptly penned, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.” Regrettably, that’s exactly what hundreds of thousands of Mainers have been doing for far too long.
I wonder if our forefathers would have vouchsafed their privilege to vote to an elitist minority whose principles are as foreign to the precepts of this country’s heritage as light is to dark? I think not – because the price of freedom was dear to them, and worth every last drop of their blood.
The meanderings of politicians such as Collins beg our attention, expressing outrage and demanding that she reconsider the consequences of her actions. If we are persistent and unfailing, the voice of the people will once again resound with dignity and honor in the highest offices of this country, and our children’s future will know the promise that freedom and duty ensure.
