FARMINGTON – Two University of Maine students were struck by a vehicle Thursday evening at High and South streets.

Krystal Michaud, 18, Fort Kent, and Chelsey Madore, 18, Van Buren, were using a crosswalk on High Street at 6:37 p.m. when they were struck by a 1997 Buick driven by Randolph Smith, 24, of Jay.

Smith was headed north on High Street when the students crossed in front of him, Patrolman Edward Hastings of the Farmington Police Department said Friday.

Both pedestrians received minor injuries and were transported to Franklin Memorial Hospital.

They have both since been released, he said.

The driver of the vehicle was not injured and was reported to be wearing a seat belt.

The cause is still being investigated, he said, but Smith was charged with driving under the influence, failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk and failure to provide evidence of effective insurance.
