LEWISTON – The Val d’Or Foreurs don’t much like coming to the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.
In six previous trips to Lewiston, including during last year’s President’s Cup final series, the Foreurs had won just once – back on December 4, 2003.
The streak continues.
Six different Maineiacs scored a goal and Peter Delmas stopped 23 shots to lead Lewiston to a 6-4 win over visiting Val d’Or in front of 3,345, the largest crowd of the year.
“We were all pumped up for the fans,” Chaput said. “Before the game, they told us they only had the bleachers left to sell. Everyone was fired up and we were ready for this game. In the first we came out strong and hitting a lot, and in the third we protected our lead.”
Among Friday’s goal-scorers was rookie Eric Gelinas, who registered his first career goal. Tom Michalik added his second of the season, while Kevin Marshall, Stefan Chaput, Alexander Beaton and Danick Paquette also added to their totals.
“Our big strength tonight is that we played as a team,” Marshall said. “Tonight, Gelinas scored, Michalik scored, everybody put something into it, and that’s why we were able to keep them away from the puck and win this game.”
The Foreurs, meanwhile, slipped to 12-14-1-2, and had their head coach, Eric Lavigne, scratching his head after the game.
“We gave them gifts, all night long,” Lavigne said. “Their fourth and fifth goals, we might as well have handed those to them on a silver platter. We can’t beat a team like Lewiston playing like that.”
Lewiston, meanwhile, climbs to 17-10-1-0 and maintains its hold on third place in the Eastern Division. Cape Breton defeated Halifax on Friday, and Saint John also won. Acadie-Bathurst, Moncton and St. John’s all lost and Prince Edward Island was idle. The Maineiacs have won five of six.
Lewiston started off slowly, thanks in part to a few too many penalties. Val d’Or capitalized on its first two chances with a man advantage and took a 2-0 lead through the 7:50 mark of the first period.
“We didn’t have a great start,” Maineiacs’ head coach Ed Harding said. “They’re a power play team. They live on that, and those guys log a lot of ice time, but they can’t keep up with us 5-on-5 because we have more depth.”
Lewiston chiseled away, though.
Chaput took a brilliant bounce pass off the left boards from linemate Stefano Giiati and slid the puck 5-hole on Val d’Or goalie Mathieu Cote to make it 2-1, and early in the second, Beaton tipped in a Patrick Cusack shot from the right point to make it 2-2.
“It was a little bit of luck,” Beaton said. “I saw it coming at the last second.”
Paquette, playing on a line with Giliati and Chaput, potted his 10th of the season on a feed from Chaput to make it 3-2.
“That was the best game the three of them have played together,” Harding said. “Sometimes it’s just one of those things, they’ve got to get used to each other.”
Val d’Or’s Shawn Morton-Boutin equalized 24 seconds later, but a two-goal outburst from Gelinas and Michalik pushed the Maineiacs to a 5-3 lead.
Anze Ropret made it 5-4 in the third before Marshall scored his seventh to ice the game. Marshall was playing his sixth game in eight days after a solid outing at this week’s ADT Canada-Russia Challenge.
“The coaches gave me all day to rest (Friday), so I slept until noon,” Marshall said. “That helped me a lot, and I didn’t feel tired at all.”
Lewiston play next at home Sunday at 4 against the St. John’s Fog Devils.
