ORONO – With goalie Ben Bishop pulled for an extra skater, Rob Bellamy scored his first goal of the season with 59 seconds to play to help Maine salvage a 5-5 tie with Vermont in Hockey East action Sunday.

The Catamounts (3-5-2) scored the first two goals of the game and maintained the two-goal edge through two periods before the Maine (4-6-2) roared back behind goals from Keenan Hopson and Bellamy.

The Black bears outshot Vermont, 32-22. Bishop blocked 17 shots.

USM 4, Cortland St. 1

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.. – Jamie Gilbert stopped 16 shots to lead Southern Maine to a 4-1 hockey victory over Cortland State to win the Skidmore Invitational.

Josh Giordani and Zach Joy each had a goal and an assist for the Huskies (4-0).

This is the first time USM has started a season 4-0 since 1975-76.

Bowdoin 5, Nichols 2

WATERVILLE – Bowdoin broke a deadlock with two goals in the final 1:14 of the second period, then added an insurance goal in the third for a 5-2 victory over Nichols in the championship game of the Colby Faceoff Classic.

Five different players scored for the Polar Bears (2-1).

Men’s basketball

Bowdoin 77, St. Joe’s 59

BRUNSWICK – Bowdoin scored 16 points off turnovers in the first half to take control early en route to a 77-59 triumph over St. Joseph’s.

The Polar Bears’ lead was cut to nine points three times before they ended the game with a 11-2 run. Andrew Sargeantson led Bowdoin (3-1) with 18 points and 10 rebounds.

Women’s basketball

St. Joe’s 85, Maine-Machias 31

STANDISH – Carolyn Freeman scored a game-high 19 points to lead St. Joesph’s to an easy 85-31 victory over Maine-Machias.

The Monks limited UMM to less than 20 percent shooting and forced 28 turnovers.
