GORHAM – A well-balanced Southern Maine offense posted a 77-58 victory over Bowdoin in women’s basketball action held Tuesday between nationally-ranked opponents.
The No. 12 Huskies (4-0) extended their consecutive winning streak at Hill Gymnsaium to 71 games, dating back to November 2003.
USM opened the game with a 20-6 run en route to a 40-19 advantage by halftime. The Huskies received 12 points each from Josalee Danieli, Shannon Kynoch, and Becky Dixon, while Nicole Paradis added 10 more.
Bowdoin (2-2), ranked 21st in NCAA Div. III, was paced by Alexa Kaubris, who led all scorers with 17 points. Jill Anelauskas added 11 points and grabbed a game-high 16 rebounds.
St. Joe’s 58, Gordon 45
STANDISH – Carolyn Freeman drained 16 points to lead the St. Joseph’s women’s basketball team to a 58-45 win over Gordon College Tuesday. Meghan Daigle added 10 points for the Monks (3-1) win.
For Gordon (1-3), Sara Schwanke led all players with 17 points, while Rebecca Carroll chipped in with 12 points for the Fighting Scot.
Men’s basketball
Providence 78, Maine 48
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Geoff McDermott had 17 points and a game-high 13 rebounds to help Providence defeat Maine, 78-48.
Weyinmi Efejuku added 14 points and Brian McKenzie added 13 to help the Friars to their fourth win in five games.
Brian Andre, with 17 points and 10 rebounds, was the only player in double figures for Maine (3-4).
McDermott scored the first six points for Providence, which never trailed. Maine tied the game twice, including a layup by Jordan Cook to make it 13-13 after eight minutes.
The Friars held the visitors to just 35 per cent overall and scored 20 points off 23 Bear turnovers. They also had 14 steals to none for Maine.
Bates 63, Endicott 62
BEVERLY, Mass. – Brian Wholey drove the length of the court and buried a jumper with one second remaining to lift Bates to a 63-62 triumph over Endicott.
Wholey and Brian Ellis led the Bobcats (1-3) with 19 points apiece, while Chris Wilson added 12 points
Bowdoin 59, USM 47
GORHAM – Andrew Hippert scored a game-high 19 points to lead Bowdoin to a 59-47 come-from-behind victory over Southern Maine.
Hippert scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half to give the Polar Bears (4-1) the surge they needed. Kyle Jackson chipped in with 10 points.
The Huskies (2-2) led at the half, 28-21, but just couldn’t hold on to that advantage. Broderic Jones led the Southern Maine effort with 17 points, while Drew Coppenrath had 10 points.
