A matter discussed by nearly everyone present at the Lewiston Board of Trade meeting was the condition of the Sabattus street graveyard. At the present time the yard is in a neglected state, whereas it should be the pride of the city. There the forefathers of the city are buried, some soldiers who fought in the Revolutionary War and others who were the first settlers.

It was finally voted that a request be sent to the city government, through the secretary, to have the graveyard fenced in, underbrush removed and the place repaired and put in a presentable shape.

50 years ago, 1957

• Five lightly-clad youths who climbed the world’s windiest mountain in deceivingly balmy weather have been retrieved from their frigid roost by the Air Force.

The U.S. Weather Bureau observatory atop 6,288-foot Mt. Washington said tonight that two boys and three girls climbed to the summit Saturday in 20-degree temperatures accompanied by 20 mile and hour wind.

NEW YORK – The nation’s first manned space ship could be blasting off within five years, a U.S. missile scientist said today. He listed this technically possible timetable for space accomplishments: A manned space station in 6-7 years. First flight around the moon in 8-10 years.

BOSTON – Publisher Rupert Murdoch and four remaining newspaper unions faced a midnight deadline Thursday in an attempt to save the Boston Herald American, one of two remaining newspapers in the city that gave birth to American Journalism.

The Herald American’s lineage goes back to the Boston Record and American, two papers begun by William Randolph Hearst in 1904, and the Herald and Traveler, survivors from the early 19th century, that merged shortly after the turn of the century.

SALT LAKE CITY – A polyurethane pump began softly clicking Thursday in the chest of a tough-willed retired dentist who became the first human to receive a permanent artificial heart. Barney B. Cark, 61, opened his eyes hours after part of his diseased heart was removed and the plastic heart was implanted.
