It’s not easy switching from being the rulers of the middle school to becoming “stinky freshmen” at the high school. Many of us were looking forward to this transition, ready to take on whatever got thrown at us, and mostly ready for more freedom with high hopes of new relationship options. Some were not ready to let go of their reign of power of being the oldest kids in the school, while still others were trembling at the idea of the meaning of “high school.” This means that after this our lives are in our own hands. Whether excited or terrified, high school has been our destination.
As of now I have been a “stinky freshman,” as dubbed by the upperclassmen, for a whole quarter now. I can still recall the first day of high school as terrifying. The fear of getting lost and all the questions like: “Are the teachers nice? Will there be tons of homework?” and “Are the upperclassmen as mean as they come off to be?” were all very overwhelming. Luckily, everybody made it through the day and most even without getting lost; but lucky for me a junior pointed me in the right direction.
The only really big change besides the freedom was what came along with it: responsibility. Responsibility includes more homework and projects. Though it is more work, and though some people may disagree, it is certainly doable.
High school isn’t the scary picture it is painted out to be, and upperclassmen aren’t monsters—well, most of them aren’t. It turns out most of them are humans just like us…What a relief!!
