This is in response to Judson Duncan’s letter of Nov. 30. He claims that the government can better protect “our” money than the private sector. I find that difficult to believe.
Like most liberals, he assumes that Social Security is “public money.” That is where Duncan and I differ. I believe that what I pay into Social Security is my money. I should be entitled to spend or save where and when I wish, without anybody forcing me into a “bad deal.” Even this late in my life, given the choice of opting out of Social Security and investing in my own retirement, I would choose so. Keep what I have already contributed and take no more. I’ll bet that, in the end, I fare better.
It is not the duty of the government to care for the poor. The government’s sole duty is to protect our freedoms and liberties. If one cannot take care of oneself, then one should fall into the care of charitable organizations.
Americans are the biggest donators and helpers of those in need. Most of us wish to do it “on our own.” I know that I do not wish to be forced into being cared for by government agencies.
As long as simple differences in ideology exist, as in this case, unity between liberals and conservatives will never happen.
