BETHEL – Three spending articles were unanimously approved at a sparsely attended special town meeting Monday.

Town manager Scott Cole said Monday’s snowstorm likely contributed to the low turnout. He attended the meeting along with five residents, five selectmen and the town clerk. Three items totaling about $32,000 were approved.

“None of these were surprises,” Cole said.

The largest item authorizes $27,398 from the town surplus to pay for repairs to the fire station roof and exterior done this summer. Cole said the station was built in 2004.

“The contractor did a poor job on the eaves,” said Cole. “But the way the sequence of events went, there wasn’t a whole lot that could be done at the time.”

Voters also approved a restoration of $3,000 – taken out of the budget in June – to fund three months of a part-time clerical position. Cole said the job was filled in July rather than October, as was planned, due to increased activity in the town office.

“This just bridges that gap, is what it amounts to,” Cole said.

Voters also approved $1,600 for a 500-gallon gasoline tank at the town garage.
