NEW SHARON – A SAD 9 school bus turning from Water Street onto Route 2 collided with a car Thursday morning. The driver of the car and several children on the bus complained of injuries.
The accident was reported at 7:12 a.m. at the intersection of routes 2 and 134, just before a bridge.
Bus driver Marilyn Waite told police that she thought a 2003 Chevy Impala driven by Nichole Grimanis, 29, of Temple, was turning when she pulled out onto Route 2 in front of Grimanis.
There were 15 to 20 children on the bus, State Trooper William Baker said.
Most of the children were transferred to another bus, but a few complained of minor injuries and were released to their parents, Baker said.
Grimanis was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington. She was treated and released, a hospital spokesperson said later.
The bus passengers were high school and middle school students, according to Ray Cardona, assistant director of support services at SAD 9. Emergency medical technicians checked the students, who waited for more than half an hour on the bus for a state trooper to arrive from Belgrade. A spare bus was dispatched to the scene and took most of the children on to their classes.
The accident remains under investigation, Cardona said. The bus driver is fine and planned to make her afternoon bus run, he added.
The Chevy was totaled, Baker said, and the bus had about $3,000 in damage.
School mechanics were checking on the extent of damage to the bus and whether it can be salvaged, Cardona said.
