LIVERMORE FALLS – SAD 36 directors voted Thursday to apply to the state for nearly $1 million to upgrade the high and middle schools.

The district would be responsible to pay half the cost and the state the rest plus all interest, board Vice Chairman Fred Nadeau said Friday.

The district is looking at $8 million in repairs at the two schools and have been tackling jobs each year.

“We applied for $348,622 for the middle school and $592,480 for the high school for a total of $941,102 to bring the two buildings into code compliance,” Nadeau said.

That would upgrade the fire alarm system, plumbing, electrical and address other items listed as priorities in engineering studies on both buildings, he said.

It would also be enough money to resurface and reseal the roof, he added.

The district’s share of the money could be paid back $50,000 a year over 10 years, he said.

“We have been approving $100,000 a year to do these things and we are falling behind,” Nadeau said.

If Livermore and Livermore Falls, and Jay voters decide to consolidate, the loan would become part of the new regional school system’s responsibilities, if the state approves the application for revolving renovation funding.

“The other thing is we were looking at new construction and no matter what happens with consolidation, we are at least five years out from occupying a new building,” Nadeau said. “We need to maintain these buildings.”
