POLAND – A surprise party was held Nov. 3 for Thomas and Mary Dobens of Poland on the occasion of their 40th wedding anniversary. The event was planned by their daughters, Jayne Hollstein, Kristina Shorey and Laurie Chin, and was held at Excelsior Grange Hall in Poland.

Decorations were in red and white, and a collage of pictures of the couple, family and friends was displayed. A DVD of the couple, family and friends was played during the party. The DVD was made by their grandson, Dustin Shorey.

Dinner was served and music was played by Dustin Shorey. The anniversary cake with red and white roses was made by Jennifer Mason. The couple received many cards with donations for the couple’s trip to Hawaii.

Their daughter, Kristina Shorey, read a poem and a memorable poster was signed by guests.

Mr. Dobens and the former Mary Parent were married Nov. 11, 1967, at St. Mary’s Church in Augusta. In addition to their three daughters, their grandchildren are Dustin Shorey, Dylan Lagueux, Daryn Chin and Keonica Chin.

Mrs. Dobens is employed at Shaw’s in Lewiston. She is a member of the Red Hatters Society and is queen mother of the tomatoes in Poland.

Mr. Dobens is retired from Modern Woodcrafts in Lewiston, with 27 years of service. He continues to be a wood craftsman and has his own workshop. He makes items for family, friends and others. He enjoys hiking.
