Mon., Nov. 5 through Fri., Nov., 9, Monmouth Middle School Students, grades five through eight, participated in Spirit Week hosted by the Student Council. This week was for students to get into school spirit and community service and get pumped up for our winter sports season.
On Mon. students began working on a door decorating contest which would continue throughout the week. The theme for this contest was the theme of the week, “Help Out – Have Fun – Feel Good,” any decorations relating to school spirit and community service. Some student council members stayed after school and decorated the lobby in maroon and white streamers and posters promoting fun and pride in the school and our town this week and for the entire year.
On Tues., there was a hat day. Usually student council charges a dollar to wear a hat, but this week student council asked that students bring in a canned or non-perishable food item for the Cottrell-Taylor Christmas Basket Committee. This committee distributes these baskets with food to 32 needy families in Monmouth.
On Wed., there was a PJ day where students could wear pajama’s to school and again we were asking for non-perishable or canned food items. We had an impressive amount of students participate in PJ day and the whole week really.
On Thurs., students had dressed up in maroon and white anything that shows school spirit for Spirit Day.
We ended our week on Fri. with Community Service Day. Students go to different places in the community of Monmouth and rake and do other things to help out our community. While students were out working the door decorating contest was judged.
There were two winners in each grade for the door decorating contest and they won for things like school spirit, community service, and three-dimensional. On school spirit day people painted their faces and the basketball teams wore their shooter shirts. We collected 460 pounds of canned or nonperishable food between hat and PJ day. On community service day the students did a commendable amount of work. I know the group I was in raked nearly 100 trash bags of leaves. Student Council has considered this week a major success.
Monmouth Middle School student Council is looking forward to a great year as they have had a great start and have made a strong presence in their school and their community.
