SOUTH PARIS – Dr. Allan Stephen “Steve” Chase, 83, of Norway, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, at the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris.
He was born on May 7, 1924, to Alden and Marguerite Elms Chase of Bryant Pond. He graduated as valedictorian of his class at Woodstock High School in 1941, then completed a post-graduate year at Hebron Academy in 1942. While pursuing a degree at the University of Maine in Orono, World War II interrupted his education.
In the service of the Army, he achieved the rank of second lieutenant. As a pilot in the Army Air Corps, he was proficient in single-engine fighters and advanced to first pilot in B-29s.
Following the war in 1946, he married Winona Edminster of Norway.
He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1947, majoring in engineering. He maintained a lifetime connection with his fraternity, Sigma Chi. He and Winona transplanted briefly to California then lived in Medford, Mass., while he attended Tufts Dental School.
Upon his graduation in 1953, they returned to Norway, where he enjoyed a small town practice of loyal clientele spanning more than 35 years.
Steve was a lifelong athlete, participating in baseball, tennis and skiing. He was a dedicated sportsman, especially fond of rabbit hunting in tandem with a succession of beagles accompanying him over the decades. His knowledge of nature was extensive, and he greatly valued conservation as a small woodlot owner.
He was a generous benefactor to the community and showed great interest in both the Woodstock and Norway historical societies.
He is survived by two sons, Jeffrey E. Chase of Norway, and Gregory S. Chase and his wife, Penny, of Dracut, Mass.; a daughter, Jennifer A. Chase of Bryant Pond; two granddaughters, Allyson C. and husband, Jeremy Hill, of Norway, and Jessie M. Chase of Jamaica Plains, Mass.
Also surviving is an older brother, Gordon E. Chase and his wife, Janice, of Topsham; and a sister-in-law, Carolinn of Portland.
His wife of 60 years, Winona, predeceased him; as well as an older brother, Faulkner.
