PARIS – Two Rumford brothers appeared in Oxford County Superior Court on Thursday, one charged with attempted murder and the other with receiving stolen property.

Attorney John Jenness Jr. spoke on behalf of Alvah Burton Pike IV, 26, and Maurice Porter represented Scott B. Pike, 24, both of 26 Spruce St.

Alvah is charged with the Class A crimes of attempted murder, elevated aggravated assault and aggravated assault in connection with an incident in September in which a 28-year-old man suffered multiple stab wounds, according to an indictment.

An affidavit by Sgt. James Bernard of the Rumford Police Department stated Alvah stabbed the man with a switchblade knife after a verbal confrontation while shouting that he would kill him.

On Thursday, Justice Carl O. Bradford approved Jenness’ request for $750 to be used to compensate a private investigator in the case. Jenness said the case has “a number of witnesses,” and that the investigator will help in the preparation of a defense. He said he had found an investigator in Lewiston.

The investigator’s rate is not to exceed $25 an hour, and his or her services must be itemized and certified as having taken place by the defense attorney. According to the clerk of courts, the funds will come from the judicial account.

Alvah remained at the Oxford County Jail on Thursday afternoon on $100,000 surety or $20,000 cash bail.

Scott pleaded not guilty to a single-count indictment. He was arrested earlier in the month in connection with a crime spree across northern Oxford County. Over the course of a weekend, three trucks were stolen, several buildings were damaged and property was taken from a convenience store.

According to an affidavit by Lt. Hart Daley of the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, Scott was involved in the theft of a 1989 Toyota 4-Runner from the Sunday River Ski Resort in Newry. The vehicle belonged to a Camden man.

Bradford changed Scott’s bail from $200 cash to $1,000 unsecured and required him to stay in contact with his attorney.

Assistant District Attorney Joe O’Connor said Scott moves frequently so he felt the bail was appropriate.
