FARMINGTON – It was moving day Thursday at the Care and Share Food Closet Thursday, and a volunteer crew lugged box after box of food out of the building and onto waiting trucks and trailers.
The Fairbanks School Meeting House food closet will be closed, probably till the first of March, volunteer organizer Carolyn McLaughlin said. Once it’s ready, an open house will be planned, she added.
The food closet leases space from the Fairbanks School Meeting Association and knew it would vacate the space while renovations were completed, she said. Crews will work to make the space better, she said as she directed 20 volunteers from the Wilton Lions Club and Old South Church. Food will be stored at Save-A-Lot until the food closet reopens.
A three-month supply of food was given to 185 families to hold them over while work is done. Supplies also were left at Fairbanks Union Church for people in need or who haven’t already received an allotment, she added.
The Rev. Scott Planting from Fairbanks Union, who is also involved with the Fairbanks School group, said the church is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. five days a week and will cover the need while the food closet has to be closed.
A crew from Taylor Made Homes is working on the school building and needs the food closet space empty in order to put in a new ceiling and complete electrical wiring and duct work.
The project should be completed in April.
Foreman Steve Atwood said his crew has been putting siding on the building and working on handicap accessibility before beginning work inside.
