SEEING RED: Some aircraft owners are angry over Maine’s decision to collect a “use tax” on out-of-state owners who didn’t pay sales taxes in other states and who brought their airplanes to Maine more than 20 days in the first year they owned them.
SEEING GREEN: From July 2005 to July 2007, Maine sent 27 bills to out-of-state plane owners asking for about $440,000 in use taxes, interest and penalties.
THE FALLOUT: Critics say the tax is unfair and discourages people from visiting or investing in Maine. Maine tax officials say they’re simply enforcing the law.
