MACHIAS (AP) – The body of a 61-year-old man was found in a pile of snow behind the Downeast Community Hospital on Wednesday afternoon after checking himself out on Tuesday night. The Maine Warden Service said Reid Emery of Eastport was reported to be delusional and wearing slippers and a light shirt when he checked himself out of the hospital at about 8:15 during a snow storm that dropped nearly a foot of snow on the Machias area. Emery’s body was found less than 400 feet from the hospital.

Hospital officials said they can’t prevent adult patients from leaving against medical advice, but that they notify others when it does happen.

Maine State Police are investigating. Foul play is not suspected.
