AUBURN – The Parish of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church, 78 Pleasant St., is inviting the community to an Epiphany Festival of Lessons and Carols at 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 6.
Originally planned for the Advent season, the service was postponed due to a snowstorm on Dec. 16. Hymns and readings have been changed to reflect the different time of the church year. Jan. 6 is the Feast of the Epiphany, the 12th night of the 12 days of the Christmas season. Epiphany is derived from a Greek word meaning “manifestation” or “appearing.” The feast and its season celebrates the manifestation of God to the world in Jesus the Christ
This is a service of readings from the Old and New Testaments with hymns or special music between the readings. Members and friends of the parish will serve as lectors, choir, acolytes and ushers. The organist is Jonathan Whitmore.
In addition to the traditional service of lessons and carols, there will be the blessing of the newly restored organ. The restoration of the 6-rank 1921 Hook and Hastings organ chest was completed in July 2007.
Offerings made at the festival will support the funding of the organ restoration project. A light reception of sandwiches and desserts will follow the service in the Parish Fellowship Hall or Washburn Room. For more information, call St. Michael’s at 782-1346.
