Breastfeeding

AUBURN – Expectant women and breastfeeding mothers are invited to the La Leche League meeting to be held at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 9, at 102 Bennett Ave. Babies are welcome.

This month’s discussion will focus on “The Advantages of Breastfeeding for Mother and Baby.” All concerns about breastfeeding are welcome for discussion.

For breastfeeding help or directions to the meeting, call the La Leche League leader at 782-6645.

OES to convene

AUBURN – Pine Cone Chapter 26, Order of the Eastern Star, will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, at the Masonic Hall, 1021 Turner St.

Members will celebrate Christmas in January as they were unable to meet in December due to bad weather. The chapter is making Love Bags to be donated to shelters for abused women and children in the Auburn and Lewiston area.

Members will make donations to buy items to go into the bags.

The stations of conductress and associate conductress will be honored. Phyllis Bakely, grand conductress, and Judith Wilkie, associate grand conductress, have been invited. The members will renew the obligation, and the landmarks will be read.

Mabel Soucy will receive her 25-year pin. The chapter has the traveling emblem for District 4.

The meeting will be preceded by a potluck supper at 6:15 p.m. All Eastern Star members are welcome.

Items needed

POLAND – The auction is coming to Ricker Memorial Library and the Friends need help. Donations and/or services, such as time, talent and skill, are needed to be auctioned off at the March 8 fundraiser at 5 p.m. at the library.

Poland Town Manager Dana Lee has volunteered to be auctioneer. The auction will be the major fundraiser of the Friends of Ricker Memorial Library and all proceeds will benefit the library.

Donation forms are available at the library. Provide a picture or description of the item and service. Call 998-4390 for more information.

Benefit dance

LEWISTON – An American Cancer Society benefit dance, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Androscoggin County, will be held from 8 p.m. to midnight Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Knights of Columbus Hall, East Avenue.

Music will be by Shake, Rattle and Roll with Melinda Laliberty.

Fundraisers will include raffles, a 50/50 drawing and silent auction. Baked goods and coffee will be available toward the end of the evening.

Quit smoking

LEWISTON – L/A has a local resource to help smokers become ex-smokers. Every Thursday from 6 to 7 p.m., quitters and those wishing to quit meet at 99 Campus Ave. to talk about personal struggles, pass on helpful tips, have guest speakers and raffle off door prizes.

Information on low-cost or no-cost ways to get the patch, hypnosis and new nicotine suppressing drugs is available.
