NEW GLOUCESTER – At the end of the month, voters will be asked to accept Briarwood Drive off Penny Road as a town way effective July 1.

Selectmen unanimously approved putting the question to voters at a special meeting Jan. 30. Briarwood Drive is in the Briarwood Estates housing development.

Voters will also be asked to approve the design and construction plans for a fire station on Route 100. Details for funding are being worked on that include the possibility of bonding, using undesignated fund balances that total $4 million, for example. The project is expected to cost roughly $2.3 million and include a five-bay garage.

Selectmen agreed to begin informal discussions with North Yarmouth on sharing the New Gloucester waste transfer station on Bald Hill Road.

Selectmen say longer hours of operation, equipment replacement and enlargement of the facility need to be addressed.

New Gloucester is a member of Mid-Maine Waste Action Corp. in Auburn, but North Yarmouth is not.

Town Manager Rosemary Kulow, who chairs the MMWAC board, said waste separation would be required for billing purposes.

Selectmen tabled action on a proposal for engineering services to evaluate the transfer station needs and options until it’s known if North Yarmouth will use the station.

Finally, selectmen overturned a previous decision for the reconstruction of the Woodman Road. Last year, they agreed on a complete reconstruction and paving.

Now, they agreed 5-0 to partial reconstruction and no paving beginning at the Route 231 intersection.
