RANGELEY – A man sought since Dec. 29 turned himself in to police Monday after he was accused of breaking into an acquaintance’s residence.

Nicholas Hanson-Rand, 23, of Rangeley, was charged with violation of a protection order, obstructing a report of a crime, violating conditions of release, endangering the welfare of a child, criminal mischief and criminal trespass, police Chief Phil Weymouth said.

Hanson-Rand broke into the woman’s residence and had a verbal confrontation, the chief said, and when she went to call police, he disconnected the phone and created a scene.

The woman fled the Main Street residence out of fear and went to a neighbor’s to call police. She left her young child behind, he said, and did not fear the man would do anything to hurt the child.

Once police arrived at the residence, the door was locked but the officer could hear the child crying.

After getting some tools from the police station, the officer was able to get into the residence.

The child was left alone for about 20 minutes, he said.
