AUBURN – Norman Thompson, whose photogenic leap from a third-story balcony to elude Lewiston police gained national attention in the fall, has drawn new charges.

The indictment handed up Wednesday by an Androscoggin County grand jury included stealing a car, eluding an officer and operating after suspension.

The charges will be added to a long list.

In November, Thompson, 35, of Lewiston and Mexico, pleaded guilty in Androscoggin County Superior Court to burglary, forgery, theft and violating conditions of release. He was accused of stealing two cars from Turner and Lewiston in September and passing bad checks the same month. Thompson is also answering Oxford County charges of home and vehicle burglaries. He was jailed there after a 14-hour police standoff Oct. 11 at his mother’s home in Mexico.

Thompson is known for his Oct. 3 leap.

Sun Journal photographer Russ Dillingham captured photos of the jump, then helped police capture Thompson himself, tackling the man to the ground.

Man with one orange shoe

An indictment was also handed up against a local knickknack collector – Kevin Juskewitch, 46, of 101 Ash St. – who police say burglarized a Main Street mill and stole a glass shoe.

On Oct. 9, Lewiston police were investigating reports that somebody was breaking into the mill, owned by Martin Finley, and stealing wooden pegs.

They pulled over a car near the mill, and Juskewitch, a passenger in the car, admitted he’d been inside and took a souvenir.

The shoe was made of glass, colored orange and had a high heel.

In 2005, Juskewitch was profiled in the Sun Journal for his collection of knickknacks, which include a hatbox from Peck’s department store, a worker’s ID button from Pepperell Manufacturing Corp. and wooden pegs from the former Libbey Mill.

“I love history. I love old things. I feel like I wasn’t born in ’61, I was born way back. It sounds crazy,” he said in the 2005 interview.

Stealing by the bag

The grand jury also indicted Jill Lynn Polley, 32, of 238 Park St., Lewiston in connection with a string of downtown burglaries.

Undercover police officers arrested Polley and Joseph Garland, 34, of Lewiston, in March after spotting a car described by a witness to a break-in.

The burglaries plagued Nichols, Wood and Vale streets for several days. Several thousand dollars’ worth of easily pawnable jewelry, money and DVDs were taken, and the undercover officers had staked out the neighborhood, looking for anything unusual.

An officer watched Garland go into a house, leave with a bag of stuff and hop into a car, police said at the time. Polley was driving the vehicle.

Police said they were stealing the items to collect money to buy drugs.

Garland was indicted on a theft charge in April. In August, he was arrested in connection with a second, larger string of downtown burglaries.
