FARMINGTON – Mt. Blue found itself behind the eight ball Wednesday against visiting Camden Hills. The Windjammers dominated the dual meet and earned a 49-16 win.
The Cougars (5-7) entered the meet undermanned and were overmatched by Camden Hills. It’s inevitable that every team will experience a dose of adversity during a season. A combination of illness and academic shortfalls has the Cougars wavering.
“Things will improve,” Mt. Blue coach Bob O’Connor said. “A majority of the guys plan on dropping to a lower weight class when the extra (one-pound) weight allowance becomes effective (Jan. 19). Right now, it’s hard on team record because we are giving-up points.”
The featured match pitted Mt. Blue’s Sam Webber and Murphy McGowen of Camden Hills at 130 pounds.
Webber, the 2007 Class A state champion also placed fifth in New England, and McGowen won a Class B state championship in 2005. Webber led 2-0 after one period and scooted out the back door for a reversal. McGowen attempted a throw in the third period, but Webber countered with a leg and exposed the Windjammer’s shoulder to the mat. The Cougars’ senior also decisioned McGowen 11-3 at the Noble tournament in 2006.
“I felt good out there and didn’t have any concerns,” said Webber, who is 24-3 at 135. “I’m glad that I dropped to 130 and I plan on staying there. Those guys are big at 135 and there wont be any more losses for me this year.”
Camden Hills (16-1), the defending Class B state champion, won a thriller when Angus Pfister executed a takedown at the buzzer for an 8-7 decision against Jon Tams at 145.
“It’s going well,”Camden Hills coach Levi Rollins said. “We’re getting people in the right weight classes and (the team) had a good showing at the Redskin. I feel we are a better tournament team.”
Jocy Cruz of Jay, who practices with the Cougars, was stuck by Zac Fields at 119. Craig Audet sunk-in a reverse half nelson at 171. Audet, who recently moved from North Carolina, must compete in junior varsity matches for the remainder of the season, according to MPA rules.
