FARMINGTON – Renovating or relocating the Mallett School will be the topic at a meeting on Tuesday to provide parents and others with information.
The Parent Teacher Association at the W.G. Mallett School decided to hold the meeting to tell people about the site selection process, said Sara Dean, PTA president, on Thursday.
The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the school with a snow date of Thursday, Jan. 17.
The group invited three presenters to the meeting: SAD 9 Assistant Superintendent Susan Pratt, school architect Stephen Blatt and a representative of the state Department of Education, Dean said.
Pratt will give a presentation on the process that needs to be followed for state funding. She will also relate where the building committee and SAD 9 are in a two-year timeline proposed by the DOE, Dean said.
Blatt, of Stephen Blatt Architects of Portland, hired by the district, will describe the two sites being considered for the school. Either a renovation of the present site on Quebec Street or a relocation and classroom addition to Cascade Brook School are being studied. Blatt will bring drawings for both sites and explain what is involved in either relocating or renovation.
The third presenter will speak on the criteria considered in the site location application, Dean said. The building committee will have to submit an application for a site and parents want to know what is needed for either option, she said.
While the building committee plans to hold future public hearings on the school’s future, PTA members initiated this meeting because parents want more information and a chance to ask questions. Paul Mills will moderate questions to keep it from becoming a debate, Dean said.
“Our goal is to provide the audience with more information and give them a chance to ask questions,” she said.
Planning to attend the meeting, Teresa Berry of Farmington admitted she didn’t know a lot about the issue but felt it would give a “better sense of what the people want” for the school.
