LEWISTON – Five years after it began, Rick Meyers’ tenure as Lewiston High School’s girls’ soccer coach is over.

“(Lewiston athletic director) Jason (Fuller) is looking to change the direction of the program,” Meyers said Thursday. “All it was, it was really short and sweet, and he told me my contract wasn’t being renewed. I didn’t know what to say to it, there really isn’t a whole lot to say.”

Fuller said Thursday he didn’t want to comment on personnel issues, saying only that “the position is open.”

“It’s been open for a while,” Fuller said.

“I don’t know any of the plans he has, or anything he’s doing,” Meyers added.

Meyers’ reign at Lewiston had a little bit of everything. For the first couple of years, Meyers had one of the best teams in Class A. In his first season, Meyers guided the Blue Devils to a 14-1-1 mark and a KVAC championship. They lost in the Eastern Class A semifinals that year, but advanced to the Eastern final the following year.

Last season his fifth, the team went 1-13.

“We had a couple of good years, but that’s the thing, I enjoyed all of my teams,” Meyers said. “I don’t look at this past year’s team as any better or worse than the teams we won a lot with. I think they all were special to me.”

Also on Meyers’ watch, standout Laura Martel, now playing for the University of Maine, earned All America status.

Meyers said he doesn’t plan on coaching anywhere else for the time being.

“I’m going to stay involved as much as I can,” Meyers said. “I don’t have any plans on coaching right away anywhere, but I enjoyed coaching at Lewiston. I’m not bitter or mad. I kind of look at it as a change in direction. There’s not a whole lot you can say about it.”

Meyers was hopeful that whomever Fuller chooses to replace him will help restore Lewiston as a contender.

“Hopefully they can get the program back on track,” Meyers said. “I hope they can get things turned around. I’m sure they can. It’s just a matter of time sometimes.”
