NEW VINEYARD – A Massachusetts man was charged Friday with leaving the scene of an accident in which several large beams fell from his trailer and killed a New Portland driver Wednesday.
A warrant was issued Friday afternoon by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department for Domingos Medeiros, 48, of Assonet, Mass., after police examined his Ford 550 truck in Massachusetts and determined it was probable that it was involved in the accident on Route 27, Lt. Niles Yeaton said.
Medeiros did not stop at the scene, and police are not sure if he knew the beams had fallen. While police asked the public for information about the accident Thursday, a lawyer for Medeiros contacted the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, Yeaton said.
Cpl. Stephen Charles and Detective Thomas White traveled to the southwestern Massachusetts town Thursday, but as of Friday evening had not found Medeiros, the lieutenant said, and were returning to Maine.
Medeiros is connected with Hardpine Inc. of Fall River, Mass., Yeaton said.
Massachusetts police will continue the search, he said. The warrant for Medeiros has been entered into a nationwide crime information computer system so if he is stopped by police anywhere in the United States the officer will know he’s wanted.
Yeaton said it’s expected that when he’s apprehended he will be charged with being a fugitive from justice from Maine.
Medeiros and a passenger were traveling south on Route 27 shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday with an attached gooseneck trailer carrying about a half-dozen large beams. The accident happened about three miles north of the Farmington town line.
A small vehicle driven by Stephen McKenney, 55, of New Portland was traveling north followed by a second vehicle. The beams came off the trailer and struck the two vehicles including McKenney’s windshield, he said. He died at the scene.
The driver of the second vehicle, Katherine Jones, 43, and her passenger suffered minor injuries, police said. Further information about them was not available Friday night.
They were checked by ambulance crews at the crash site and released at the scene.
The department wished to thank those who provided information that helped in the investigation, Yeaton said.
