LEWISTON – Franklin E. Hunnewell of Durham, died Friday evening, Jan. 18, at CMMC in Lewiston.
Born in Lewiston, Aug. 2, 1933, a son of the late Grover and Catherine (Neal) Hunnewell, he graduated from local schools, including Edward Little High School, before joining the Army as a paratrooper. He served during the Korean War and though he was never in combat, he was very proud of his time spent in the service.
On June 7, 1958, he married the love of his life, Cynthia Bowie. They moved to Durham, where they began their family and farm together. Franklin worked many jobs, including starting an abattoir, until he found his passion in farming. He loved his garden.
In his later years, he especially enjoyed watching the deer, turkeys and various wildlife that would wander out from the edges of the woods into his fields to enjoy the land that he made his living from for so many years. He was also a faithful New England sports fan, ensuring he caught every single Red Sox, Patriots and Celtics game.
He is survived by his wife, Cynthia, who enjoyed 49 years of marriage; two sons, Patrick and wife, April, of Durham and Curt and wife, Leslie, of New York City; a daughter, Darlene and companion, Brian Sabine, of Durham; and three grandchildren, Sarah, Charles and Douglas Hunnewell of Durham. He also leaves four brothers, James and wife, Carol, Walter and wife, Freda and John and wife, Adell, all of Auburn, and George and wife, Carol, of Windham; a sister, Beatrice and husband, Clifford Libby, of New Gloucester; a sister-in-law, Vida Hunnewell of Lisbon Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
Franklin was predeceased by a brother, Lewis.
