JAY – A teenage boy faces a felony terrorizing charge and possible expulsion from school after a bomb threat was discovered Friday morning on math computers in a high school classroom.

The boy, under 17 years old, was arrested and taken to Mountain View Youth Development Center, a juvenile detention facility in Charleston, where he will stay until a court hearing next week, Jay police Chief Larry White Sr said.

Students were evacuated to the middle school while Jay High School was checked for explosive devices, White said. None were found, he said.

The message “bomb in the room” was found on more than one mathematical Texas Instrument computer in one of the classrooms, White said.

The message appeared on graphing calculators, Superintendent Robert Wall said.

“Within a very few minutes police had a suspect and with the assistance of school administrators gathered evidence in the case,” White said.

After interviewing some students at the high school the boy was arrested and charged with terrorizing, White said.

Wall said the boy was suspended for 10 days and a disciplinary hearing will be set up and the Jay School Committee will consider expulsion in the near future.

Police Detective Drew Hufnagel led the investigation with White and Cpl. Jeffrey Fournier assisting. Jay firefighters also assisted in searching the school. The threat was reported at 8:07 a.m.

Students were returned to the high school after about 50 minutes once police and school officials deemed it safe to do so.
